The C-Side celebrates local musicians and gives students hands-on experience.
Columbus, Ohio (April 17, 2019) — For plenty of music lovers, producing a record is a dream come true. For Katie Dybzinski, it’s homework.
The Groove U student and three fellow pupils at the private, two-year, music-industry program in Dublin spent the past eight months putting together The C-Side, an album that features various Columbus performers. The aim is to give Groove U students hands-on experience in the music industry, including writing contracts, writing press releases and developing relationships.
Dybzinski and her partners—Scott Saylor, Maddy Slimak and Kalyn French—invited local bands to record a cover of another Columbus group. After some research, they contacted about 50 artists by email, phone and in person. “It worked out well both with the letter ‘C’ relating to Columbus and also ‘C’ being the side of a vinyl album you don’t normally get to hear, as well as a side of music not heard from Columbus bands,” says Dybzinski, who spearheaded marketing and public relations for the project. ”‘C’ also stands for cover, so in a way it’s a triple-entendre, which makes it super unique.”
The artists who joined The C-Side project are Zoo Trippin’, Mistar Anderson, Tourist Trap, 90′S KIDS, Cousin Simple, Harmless Habit, PronToh, Sarah Hudson and Something Else. They all accepted to perform a song of another band and in return let them play one of theirs.
“It’s a very cohesive album in terms of relationships,” says Dybzinski. “It’s a project that displays the camaraderie and the collaboration within Columbus’ music scene.”
Performances were recorded and filmed by the group of students. Videos were then shared on YouTube and averaged 220 views per track. The recording includes eight tracks and has been pressed on vinyl albums manufactured in Columbus. Elementary Records, Groove U’s student-run label, will release album.
A release party is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 25 at Craft & Vinyl, 1806 W. 5th Ave. Cousin Simple will offer a live performance at 7:30 p.m.
