Our program is built from the outside-in. Every month throughout the entire year, we sit down and listen to working industry professionals. They tell us who they would hire and why, and that's why all our students get foundational courses in audio production, music business, live sound, video and interactive before deciding upon a specialization. It's also a business of entrepreneurs, that's why we include business entrepreneurship and career development courses, as well as trips to South-by-Southwest. Finally, because we believe the best musicians make the best business people, all students get private lessons each term on a commercial musical instrument.

TERM 1.0 (Fall)

 

BUS 301 • business | the career

Early career development, includes: business communication (written & spoken), presentations, and portfolio development.

MUS 302 • music | the digital domain

Survey of music production, includes: software (ProTools), hardware (recording studio, microphones) and theory.

MUS 304 • music | the video

Survey of video production, includes: software (FinalCut, ProTools), hardware (video studio, cameras, lighting) and theory.

BUS 315 • business | the fundamentals

Principles of business, includes: organization, structure, accounting, and economics..

EXP 300.1 • experience | the seminar

 All-student learning experience, including: guest speakers, community projects, collaborations, and volunteer opportunities

EXP 300.2 • experience | the lessons

Private instruction, includes: instrument, theory, and group rehearsals, with one (1) class hours total each week: 0.5 hour with an instructor one-on-one learning instrument techniques; 0.5 hour with an instructor learning theory and history.

TERM 2.0 (Spring)

 

MUS 313 • music | the business

Survey of the music business, includes: history of the industry, development of genres, impact of video and interactive, current music industry practices, and career exploration.

MUS 315 • music | the trends

Survey of emerging immersive media technology. Includes: software (Maya, Adobe), hardware (360 cameras, drones), techniques (podcasting/vodcasting, green screen, location audio), and theory (digital storytelling)

MUS 316 • music | the process

The song creation process, includes: the songwriting (lyricism & melody), and production/direction (creative & business) concerns.

MUS 318 • music | the concert

Survey of the live experience, includes: live sound reinforcement and concert booking/promotion.

EXP 310.1 • experience | the seminar

All-student learning experience, including: guest speakers, community projects, collaborations, and volunteer opportunities;  music industry conference attendance, such as the South-by-Southwest (SxSW) music conference and festival in Austin, TX.

EXP 310.2 • experience | the lessons

Private instruction, includes: instrument, theory, and group rehearsals, with one (1) class hours total each week: 0.5 hour with an instructor one-on-one learning instrument techniques; 0.5 hour with an instructor learning theory and history.

TERM 2.5 (Summer)

 

EXP 320.4 • experience | the externship

100 hours total spent in-the-field and on-the-job with qualified media arts industry professionals. Additional time required completing externship assignments and consultation with the instructor. Final hour is all-student attendance at yearly graduation ceremony. 

Experience is broad in focus, as it is designed to allow the student to explore a career path before solidifying a specialization(s).

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of all term 1.0 and term 2.0 courses or permission of instructor.

TERM 3.0 (Fall)

 

BUS 401 • business | the entrepreneur

Principles of business management, includes: operations management, entrepreneurship, financing; operational components include: permits, licensing, HR, insurance, tax laws.

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of BUS 315 • business | the fundaments.

MUS 401 • music | the law

Advanced concepts in entertainment law, includes: copyright and contracts.

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of MUS 313 • music | the business.

EXP 400.1 • experience | the dress rehearsal

All-student learning experience, including: guest speakers, community projects, collaborations, and volunteer opportunities intended to prepare the student for MUS 402 • music | the finale.

EXP 400.2 • experience | the lessons

Private instruction, includes: instrument, theory, and group rehearsals, with one (1) class hours total each week: 0.5 hour with an instructor one-on-one learning instrument techniques; 0.5 hour with an instructor learning theory and history.

TERM 4.0 (Spring)

 

BUS 401 • business | the job

Advanced career development, including: interviewing & job search techniques, portfolio preparation, small business planning and presentation.

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of all term 1.0 + term 2.0 + term 3.0 courses or permission of instructor.

MUS 402 • music | the finale

Multiple, collaborative, capstone projects involving students from music ▸ production, music ▸ business, music ▸ live, music ▸ video, music ▸ interactive, and music ▸ independent..

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of all term 1.0 + term 2.0 + term 3.0 courses, or permission of instructor.

EXP 400.1 • experience | the seminar

All-student learning experience, including: guest speakers, community projects, collaborations, and volunteer opportunities; music industry conference attendance, such as the South-by-Southwest (SxSW) music conference and festival in Austin, TX; note: not Take 2 eligible.

EXP 400.2 • experience | the lessons

Private instruction, includes: instrument, theory, and group rehearsals, with one (1) class hours total each week: 0.5 hour with an instructor one-on-one learning instrument techniques; 0.5 hour with an instructor learning theory and history.

TERM 4.5 (Summer)

 

EXP 450.4 • experience | the externship

100 hours total spent in-the-field and on-the-job with qualified media arts industry professionals. Additional time required completing externship assignments and consultation with the instructor. Final hour
is all-student attendance at yearly graduation ceremony. 

Experience is narrow in focus and must be directly related to a student’s declared specialization(s), as it is designed to provide the student a more direct path to employment.

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of all term 1.0 + term 2.0 + term 3.0 courses, or permission from instructor.

Beginning in the second year of the program and after all prerequisites have been met, students select a Specialization in one area of study. The courses in this specialization occur concurrent with other year 2 courses.


TERM 3.0 (Fall)

 

MUS 416 • music | the artist

Study of income from the perspective of the artist and artist manager, includes: merchandising; sponsorships/endorsements; touring; contract negotiation.

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of MUS 313 • music | the business;
satisfactory completion of MUS 316 • music

MUS 418 • music | the product

Study of income from the perspective of the record label, includes: record label operations & distribution, product manufacture & marketing.

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of MUS 313 • music | the business; satisfactory completion of MUS 316 • music | the process

TERM 4.0 (Spring)

 

MUS 405 • music | the rights

Study of income from the perspective of music publisher, includes: music licensing, rights administration, and advanced songwriting techniques.

Prerequisites: satisfactory completion of all term 1.0 + term 2.0 + term 3.0 courses or permission of instructor.

OPTIONAL

 

MUS X50 • music | the independent study

Independent study is an opportunity for qualified students to work in topics of special interest or areas not otherwise available through the standard curriculum. The course content is determined by the student and the faculty member collaboratively.

Prerequisites: permission of instructor.
