With four classes of GROOVE U graduates already out in the field, where are they now? The program boasts a cumulative 96% placement rate, in-field among its graduates. Most of GROOVE U’s graduates are employed here in Ohio in careers in live event production, studio recording, promotions and booking and video editing.
“My experience with Groove U was filled with networking, video shoots, and even classes at a professional video studio. I was able to sit down one on one with professionals in the industry to both learn from and work with!” said Alex Boydston, class of 2016. “I am currently working with a company called Keepsake Solutions where we preserve old media (tapes, film, etc.) as well as work one on one with consumers to help create them a video for whatever need. I also am working on a creating a business called Boydston Productions where I create both photos and videos for local artists and businesses to show what they have to offer the community.”
The ceremony will feature a keynote presentation by one of the world's top music mastering engineers, Brian Lucey. The Columbus native became successful here in Ohio and now lives in Los Angeles since 2013, working on projects at both the highest level as well as in support of artists just starting out. He has mastered seven Grammy-winning albums or singles since 2010 including work from The Black Keys, Dr. John, and Cage The Elephant. In just the last two years, Lucey has mastered four Billboard #1 records including Shania Twain, Liam Gallagher of Oasis and Royal Blood, as well as Australian Aria award-winner Chet Faker. Lucey has also worked on several motion picture soundtracks including Atomic Blonde and The Greatest Showman Soundtrack. The Greatest Showman spent over 10 consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard chart in the UK, the most since Adele in 2011, and was iTunes #1 in 77 countries.
Brian approaches all styles of music as a healing art that connects and elevates. His experience as a musician plays directly into a unique approach to the mastering craft.
He also serves on GROOVE U’s advisory panel and as a member of the Columbus Music Commission working to bring opportunities to Columbus artists.
“GROOVE U is honored to have Brian — a world renowned engineer – present as our keynote. It is even more meaningful given he has roots in Columbus and his continued willingness to give back to the music community” said GROOVE U’s Director, Dwight Heckelman.
In keeping with tradition, all incoming and returning students will attend the ceremony to gain valuable industry insight from Lucey and make connections with returning students and alumni. Following the ceremony, 2018 graduates will sign their autograph to the drywall above Studio A, the first class to do so in GROOVE U’s new Dublin campus.
