Students Can Now Apply For State Funded Student Loans
COLUMBUS, Ohio (September 10, 2015) - GROOVE U is a proud recipient of $100,000 in student loan funds from the Ohio Means Jobs Revolving Workforce Loan Program. The program, sponsored by Senator Bill Beagle was initiated to promote and encourage Ohio’s job growth in in-demand industries. If eligible, a potential borrower can borrow up to $10,000 annually and apply those funds to an Ohio Means Jobs targeted program.
The news of the revolving loan fund was a big step forward for GROOVE U — a relatively new music career program. As they are not yet eligible to apply for Title IV Federal student loans, this Ohio Means Jobs Revolving Workforce Loan Program affords students another means to pay for a world-class education right here in Ohio.
“The Workforce Development Revolving Loan Fund is a phenomenal program,” said State Senator Beagle, sponsor of Senate Bill 1. “The program encourages fast job placement, fair student loans and more opportunities for Ohioans to gain needed job skills to contribute to the changing workforce needs in our state.”
Announced last June and being implemented now, the Ohio Means Jobs Revolving Workforce Loan Program targets training programs satisfying a skills gap in a targeted Ohio Means Jobs field. Five (5) institutions were awarded funds during the first round of considerations.
GROOVE U, a revolutionary two-year music industry career program, uses a career-centered approach to learning developed by active industry professionals. Classes are small and personalized and offer both broad, and foundational knowledge in the competitive but growing fields of music production, live sound engineering, music business, music video, and music interactive.
“We have learned from our advisory panel of experts and other industry professionals that traditional four-year institutions are not graduating students with the skills, experience, or temperament that this ever-changing job market demands.” says GROOVE U’s Founder and Director, Dwight Heckelman. “We meet with industry experts or our advisory panel almost every month to get working professionals input on industry trends and to learn what Ohio employers are hiring for — both now and in the future. We then tailor our students’ education to satisfy those needs.”
Currently, GROOVE U has 100% job placement in field among their first graduating class. Less than a month since graduating their second class in August, five (5) of seven (7) graduates are already employed in the industry.
"The unique educational environment of GROOVEU will greatly benefit me as a non-traditional learner, but would be out of my financial reach without funding from such sources as the Revolving Workforce Student Loan Fund.” says Jason Jackson, first year student at GROOVE U.
The pilot loan program has garnered support among Ohio policy makers, industry employers, educators and students. The Board of Regents in coordination with the Treasurer hopes to make this a reoccurring fund for students to access in coming years.
Over the next few weeks the State of Ohio Treasurers office will be providing training to institutions who were awarded funds on how students can be eligible and apply. For more information visit http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/3333-1-35.
